Dyslexia affects 15-20% of people globally, yet early diagnosis is rare. Only a small percentage of children ages 4-10 receive formal identification. In the U.S., of 40 million adults showing signs, only 2 million are diagnosed—leaving a 95% gap. In the U.K., just one in five children with dyslexia are diagnosed before finishing school. Late diagnosis leads to reduced intervention success, dropping from 90-95% to just 45% after the optimal window.

A significant advancement in dyslexia research has demonstrated that potential reading difficulties can be identified in young children prior to the onset of reading failure. Deficits in phonological awareness, rapid automatized naming, verbal working memory, and letter knowledge have been established as reliable early indicators of dyslexia in children as young as three years old.
Brain-Based Early Markers
EEG and MRI studies reveal dyslexia-related brain traits in infants and preschoolers, especially those with genetic risk.
Finland longitudinal study: Brain measures from birth to age 8 reliably distinguish at-risk children.
White matter alterations: Prereading children who later develop reading disabilities show detectable changes.
Family history:First-degree relatives face a fourfold higher risk; up to 50% develop dyslexia.
Reading profiles: Research on over 1,200 kindergartners found six distinct profiles, three of which indicate stable dyslexia risk over two years.

With extensive experience in private practice and business leadership, Deborah founded and managed her own therapy business in Shawnee Mission, Kansas, serving children and adults across schools, nursing homes, and office settings for 47 years. Deborah is affiliated with the American Speech, Hearing Association, reflecting her longstanding commitment to advancing speech and language services.
Megan H. Amash, an experienced, licensed speech-language pathologist with a proven track record serving both adult and pediatric populations across educational and medical settings. She specializes in assessment, data analysis, and the creation of evidence-based treatment plans to address language, literacy, and social communication needs. Her background includes leadership in interdisciplinary teams, clinical expertise in acute care and school settings, and a commitment to compliance and best practices. Megan holds a Master’s in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Kansas, a B.A. in Communications from USC. She is currently licensed in Missouri, with pending licenses in Kansas.
